Yes, I think the republic would have ended because Pompey wanted power. So eventually he would have named himself dictator for life if Julius Caesar did not exist.

Yes I agree that Prompey would then take control and name himself dictator for life but the only problem is that Caesar was fair to his gaurds or military and Prompey wouldn't do that.

Yes but since Pompey already tried to take total control he would do just that. And the people couldn't do anything about it.

I would have to disagree because even if Pompey would have taken control, he wouldn't have been able to win the Plebeians' hearts. What I mean by that is, Julius Caesar was liked by Plebeians because he gave them money, land, food, etc. Pompey would not have been able to do that. Pompey would have been overthrown easily if he just looked out by himself. Julius Caesar looked out for the Plebeians because he knew that would help him. This worked in Julius Caesar's favor because the Plebeians did not want him gone. Pompey would not have been as successful as Caesar. Therefore, I believe that the Republic would have still existed.

Wally, I happen to not agree with you because there was still Marcus Crassus or however you spell his name. So I think instead of him being dictator, Pompey and Marcus would be consuls.

Dhwani I agree with you. Pompey did not have the same love/support that Caesar did and would not have had as easy as a time to take control of Rome. This was the first time since Tarquin that someone was able to declare them self sole ruler for longer than a 6 month period. However, I do think it was inevitable that someone did take control of Rome and have absolute power. Generals and other strong military figures were entering into the political realm more and more. And sooner or later someone would have declared them self king.

I agree with Cloie k, because if there was no Caesar someone would take his place so it would probably pompey that would.

Yes, I agree with Cloie. Pompey wanted power he didn't care how nice or rude he was as long as he ruled. Pompey would have probably been on the Patricians side and made the Plebeians live a much more horrible way then they already do. He'd probably not give them food, money, land and ect. like Julius would have done.

I disagree because why would Pompey have to name himself dictator? He do what every other power hungry rich patrician was probably doing at the time: running for consul. A new consul gets elected every year, so even if he didn't win one year he could alway try again another. I don't even know why Julius Caesar made himself dictator. Also, Caesar only managed to stay in power because everyone loved him. It would be hard to rule Rome as a dictator, even if you were as beloved as Caesar.

I agree with you, why would Pompey want to be dictator when he could become a consul. Nobody ever thought about becoming dictator before Caesar existed. But, just because Caesar doesn't exist doesn't mean that someone like him won't come along later in history.

Yes I agree with you Cloie. I agree with you because I think Pompey wanted power so much, he would end the republic so the people would love him. But, I think its not going to be the same if Julius Ceaser wasn't around.

Yes, I think the republic would end. I say this because Pompey would be the only one with power which he probably wants the people to love him, then he would end the republic.

Crassus died in battle, so that means that theres only Pompey left. So, he would want the people to love him he would end the republic and probably would call himself dictator for life

I believe that the republic would end if Caesar didn't exist because Pompey would have so much power to his hand he would overuse it and name himself dictator for life and then the republic would end.

I believe this republic would fall if Caesar did not exist yes what Cloie k said Pompey would take over though the republic would still have very unfair rules there until Pompey would take over.

I do not think that the Republic would have ended if Julius Caesar did not exist. This is because the Plebeians and Patricians were all happy before the 1st triumvirate was formed. The Plebeians had more rights and the Patricians still held power. Rome was doing great before Caesar took over. The Republic would still have existed because not a lot of people were unhappy because of how the Republic ran. The Republic would have still existed if everyone still had rights.

I agree with Dhwani, I never thought about it in a way that pompey would not get the respect that Julius would from the Plebeians. Julius named himself dictator for life, because he figured he would be a fine leader, all Pompey wanted was power. Which leads me to the fact that even if Pompey were to become dictator for life, The patricians would have still been angry because he would have taken away their power. The patricians and Pompey would have been more at war than Julius and the patricians. They would have fought over power, Leaving Rome in a weak position. Having a civil war would make it much easier for invaders to sweep in and conquer Rome. I feel that the same events would happen if Pompey became dictator.

Yeah, Dhwani P. is right, the people would overthrow Pompey if he just decided to be dictator, like they did to Tarquin. They would not let someone get too powerful.

I believe that the republic would end because Julius Ceaser wouldn't have defeated Gaul and then Gaul would have probably struck Rome and defeated it. But also what would happen if Augustus wasn't adopted?

I get Peter's point because if Augustus wasn't adopted by Julius Caesar then the empire wouldn't have been formed. The Republic would have still continued.

Yes, I believe that the Roman Republic would have ended if Julius Caesar didn't exist. This is because Pompey wanted to rule the people of Rome and be loved the same way Julius was. Pompey would have eventually named himself "Dictator for Life" because the triumvirate wouldn't have existed without Julius Caesar.

Of course! Probably either Pompey or Crassus would sooner or later name there self dictator for life. Then the other senators would stab the dictator to death.

I see what point you're trying to make with Pompey or Crassus going for dictator, but I'm going to disagree that they actually could. Neither of them had the people's support like Caesar did, so there would be no way that either of them would be able to name themselves dictator for life like Caesar did. But I would agree that they would both gun for power.

I think the republic would have ended eventually, even without Caesar, it would have just taken longer to end. By naming himself dictator, Caesar started the end of the republic. If he did not exist, the republic might have gone on a little longer, for it was on shaky ground even when he was born.

I agree Sarah! Sooner or later another person that was beloved by the people, most likely a general, would have got the idea to name himself sole ruler.

I think the Roman Republic would of ended if Caesar did not exist. I think this because what happens in our history is made up of decisions by every person and not just one. Even though Caesar was the main person that made the Republic in Rome fall does not mean he was the reason the Roman Republic fell. That is why I think the Roman Republic would of fallen weather or not Caesar existed.

The Republic wouldn't of ended right off the bat if he didn't exist, but it would gradually start to come to a close overtime. Without Caesar, I believe that the Republic would've ended over a long period of time, not instantly.
