We have learned in class that the Byzantines referred to themselves as Romans even after the Western half fell. Based on what we learned, do you consider them to be Romans or Byzantines? Why?

The Byantines because they were Very Succesful. How?you ask because they made everthing fair to others. Also having a very stronge emperor (Justinian) that made things clear the his people.Still continuing they were very smart also by moving to Constantinople which is on the borders of Europe and Asia, which made Constantinople a good trading area .

I agree because they did have good emperors. They did make a good decision by moving the capitol. It is a good trading center.

I agree with all of you. Moving the capital and naming it Constantinople was a very good decision. Not only was the empire located on Europe and Asia, and had great trade, it was really well defended.

I believe that the Byzantine empire is better than Rome because Constantinople was in a "sweet spot". It was guarded on all sides by walls and three sides by water. It connected the Black sea and the Mediterranean along with Europe and Asia. If you wanted the go to any of these places you had to pay tax. Therefore a steady income of tax.

I think the Byzantine Empire was more successful because they had emperor Justinian who modified the laws and made them clearer. I'm sure (most) people were very happy with the fairness, even though the rich were upset. Everything was alright as far as revised laws up until everyone had to pay taxes. That made people very angry. At that point the Byzantine Empire doesn't seem so awesome anymore. I know I wouldn't want to pay taxes so I understand why people were so upset.

I agree with you Alaina. They definitely had better control and were much more organized. Emperor Justinian knew what he was doing and made the Byzantine Empire great, and had many great achievements along the way. And I also agree with what you said about taxes. That was definitely a big mistake on his part.

I think the Byzantine Empire was better because it was very successful and had quite a few good emperors. They were so successful because of all of the trading. Also, how Constantinople was in a crossroads between Europe and Asia.

I think that the Byzantines were right in calling themselves Romans. Yes, they made their own empire, but everything was based off of Rome. The Hippodrome is basically a rebuilt Colosseum. They still had emperors, they didn't change any of that. However, they were doing something better because they lasted longer than Rome. They were smarter in picking their location. They were at the center of everything. The Byzantine Empire was definitely a continuation of the Roman Empire, and a better one at that.

I understand your point and I'm rethinking me original response. If your family was from Germany and you were not born there, you would consider yourself German? Right? I am disagreeing with my response and I might have to make a new one.

I would consider them to be Byzantines although I completely understand that they are Romans. They are just a continuation of the Roman Empire despite the fact that they are not living in Italy. Even though the people that are from Africa are part of Rome I would consider them to be African, and the same goes for the places in Asia and other parts of Europe. I think that you are considered what name you are given ( Example = Roman ) depending on where you where born. Most people in Byzantine were born in Byzantine so I would call them Byzantines.

I think they are Romans because they are a continuation of the Roman empire, like you said. I do not believe them to be Byzantines because they are part of the Roman empire, or were, so they cant change it.

I think the people from the Byzantine Empire were right to call themselves Romans. They were a continuation of the Roman Empire, and they had almost all the same traditions as the Romans so they were right. Finally, they eventually got the western back so they got Rome back, so in that case they are Romans.

I think the Byzantines should call themselves Romans. They are a continuation of the original people of Rome and have in common many things. Their ancesters were Romans so it makes sense that they are called romans.

I think the Byzantines are Romans because they have many things in common like the hippodrome it is the best entertainment like the Coliseum. Byzantines have a lot of traditions that the Romans had.So I think the Byzantines were right to call themselves Romans.

I disagree with you David. Yes, I agree that the Byzantines got their traditions from the Romans, but the Romans got their traditions from the Greeks. Does that make the Romans Greeks? That is why I think that those from the west are Byzantine, not Roman.

I think I would classify them as Romans because they are a continuation of Rome. The Byzantine empire used laws and other traditions by Rome. Also Justinian tried to restore the Roman Empire after it fell.

I disagree with adien because some of the traditions the Byzantines had weren't actually copied of the Romans. Also,if Justinian did restore the Roman Empire it wouldn't be called the Roman Empire most likely it would have been called the Byzantine Empire.

I agree with Marlena on this one. Some of the Byzantines had their own traditions, and shouldn't be labeled after their continuation. Its really the emperors choice.

I say they are Byzantines because they lasted way longer than the Romans. They also are in a different location like not right next to where Rome was, they are between Europe AND Asia. They also just renamed BYZANTIUM!

I agree with you Pablo because I think that they are just a continuation or ROME, so they should be called Romans. Also at a point in time, they were considered part of the Eastern Roman Empire. It would be like naming a Empire, splitting it in half, then having one half be defeated, then change your name after the other half was defeated? It just doesn't make any sense. Like Byzantines and Romans are compleatly different. Before the West fell, they were considered to be ROMANS.

I think that the Byzantine people were more Byzantine than Roman. First of all, the Byzantine people did not believe in various gods, only one. So that is a difference between them. Also, the Byzantine empire is just a continuation of the Roman Empire. I do think that Byzantine people are not actually Romans

In my opinion, those of the eastern empire should be considered Byzantines. I know that technically it is one big Roman Empire, but if they wanted it to stay that way why did they take up a different name? I think that since Rome was the capital of the western empire, than they were the real Romans. Otherwise, it would be like like saying you are currently a New Yorker but you live and are in Illinios.

I would still consider them as Romans because originally they were part of the Eastern ROMAN Empire. They probably didn't know that they were technically living in "Byzantium", but they still should have been called Romans. Also they shared a lot of the same customs and traditions as the Romans did. So I think that they should still be called Romans because they shared a lot of the same traditions and customs, and they were part of the Eastern Roman Empire. Their capitol was also named after a ROMAN emperor, Constantine,

I do not agree with you Jacob. Sure the byzantine empire took the romans traditions and customs, but lets think about the roman empire BEFORE it split. The full roman empire was spread across a large portion of land. From every part of that land there was traditions and customs. The Romans were a melted pot of traditions. So, if you want to get technical, then Rome shouldn't have been called Rome. It should've been called after all the other places it conquered.

I would refer to them as the Byzantine empire. It wouldn't be fair to Justinian and Theodora if you still called it the Roman Empire. In the empire's past it may have been 1/2 of the roman empire, but western part fell. Therefore, they're free to call themselves the byzantine empire.

I consider the people to be Byzantines. I think this because if they were Romans it would be called the Roman Empire and would have strived more, then the Byzantine Empire would not exist. Also, the Byzantines were more smarter and they deserve to have their own name to their Empire to show who was part of it.
