The Vikings got a pretty bad reputation in Medieval Christian Europe. Did they deserve this bad reputation? Why or why not? (Think about the places the attacked and who wrote about the history of the Viking). Maybe rewatch Crash Course History: Vikings for more info!

I believe that the Vikings didn't deserve a bad reputation because basically all they were doing were traveling in there long ships, trading, and also spreading their influence around the world and also stealing money from church's and also killing some people. I truly believe that the Vikings are not the blood thirsty people I believe the church people were because they were being thirsty for money and the church probably took some lives from people because they gave all of there money to the church. Also, they were collecting money from people saying 'oh yeah its a good deed and you will go to heaven well basically briving people for money. That is why I believe that the Vikings didn't deserve a bad reputation.

I agree with Marlena. I don't think that the vikings deserved a bad reputation either. They weren't necessarily being good and kind people when they stole from churches, but they weren't the first and won't be the last. If they should get a bad reputation because of that, why shouldn't everyone else that stole before them?

I think that this could go both ways. When we hear 'viking', we most likely think of barbarians with helmets that have horns on them, clothing made of animal skins, and carrying clubs. While I think that they did deserve a bad reputation because they stole repeatedly from churches and such, they didn't really for anything else. Information about the vikings was not written down until after their time, so it was a secondary source. All in all, I don't think that they deserved a bad reputation.

I agree with you Tiffany. When people think of vikings, we think of literal barbarians. But maybe they weren't, because the information we got was from the attacked people. To them, vikings seemed bad.

I agree Tiffany, they could've been treated anyway in my opinion. I really don't care how they treated the vikings then. I just agree more with they deserve it, especially since they started feudalism technically.

I think that it goes both ways. Some people probably don't want to think of vikings like barbarians. Some people really like how to train your dragon, and we have to respect that. But seriously, I think that the vikings want to be feared by others. If people look at them like monsters, they probably won't want to mess with them, which is an easy win. When those monasteries were attacked, it made people afraid, and if I were a viking, I'd want people to fear me.

I agree with you Abby because I am on a half and half side. But I agree with your reasons and I believe that they were more on the "deserve the title" side because they did do a lot of raiding.

I agree with you Abby, but I don't agree with the part about them deserving a good reputation. First of all, when they burned down the monasteries, and then raided them... that was basically stealing from the poor. Well, monasteries were basically used for the poor. So, it's not very nice to do that. It's cruel to be honest.

No, because all they did is raid cities, and did what everybody else did, because everbody elase raided or attacked cities to get land, so why can't they raid monastaries?

I partially agree because other civilizations did raid each other. The Vikings attacked holy men who devoted their lives to religion. While on the other hand they didn't believe in Christianity so the vikings didn't agree with the consequences.

I believe that the viking's did deserve the bad reputation because all they did to other people was loot them, they didn't care what happened. Sure the resources are from victims of attacks but they did do tons of killing and looting. This is why I think they deserve their bad reputation.

I disagree with you. Almost every civilization there is did this. The vikings were just a little bit more violent and they stood out. Christians killed tons of innocent Muslims and Rome crushed anyone under their feet. So in conclusion the vikings did not deserve this reputation.

I think that they did deserve the bad reputation. I think this because all they did was loot people that couldn't defend themselves, like monasteries. They also didn't care who died, they just killed everybody.

The Vikings did not deserve this reputation. The reason why they have this "barbaric" reputation is because they were very violent in battle. They rarely showed mercy and fought to the death. They were feared among the people of Europe because of this. They were just a regular civilization with great warriors. However the vikings may have actually wanted this reputation because then they would be feared and people would not want to mess with them.

I dont think they should have a bad reputation they were raiding places like everyone else.People thought they were bloodthirsty they were just raiding for money.Yes they did kill a lot of people but they did what they needed to do so they can have goods.

I have mixed emotions about it. I feel like they didn't because there were points in time where they were civilized. But there were other times when they were just completely barbaric. So I feel like they did and din't deserve it. I mean in my head when I hear the word, "Viking" I think of a wild, bloodthirsty man. But when you think about it, they weren't that bad.

I think the vikings did deserve a bad reputation because they looted monasteries. That was were monks lived and they were not great fighters. Also the killed a lot of the civilians and traveled on the long ships.

I think they deserve the bad reputation. I mean if you think about it, Vikings were pretty harsh. It's just that they wanted to be feared ( like Abby said ). It was just an easy win when everyone fears you. So they do deserve the bad reputation, because they did burn down monasteries and then raid them. So, they got more riches from what was used for the poor. Come one! Who steals from the poor?!

I think that the vikings should receive a bad reputation because, they did all of these barbaric things. Like destroying towns and villages for no reason. I also think this because, they were just very bad.

I think it could go either way, but I mostly think they deserved the bad reputation. The vikings were very barbaric and harsh and destroyed so many different buildings. This is why they deserved the bad reputation. I mean like why would you steal from a monastery?

I agree. The things they did were very barbaric. The people that were witness to the violence of the Vikings might have exaggerated but they couldn't have twisted the base of it too much. They killed and raided, no one can argue that it's not barbaric.

I think the Vikings deserved their reputation. They did things to provoke people to fear them, so it's not like they're getting for no reason. Raiding and killing would make people deserve the reputation as barbaric and feared.

I believe the Vikings deserved a bad reputation. The word Viking means "barbarian". The Vikings usually stole from monasteries. They stole from monasteries because they knew that the monks couldn't fight because they weren't trained to fight.

I think they deserve a bad reputation because if your gonna destroy, and steal from churches then your asking for a bad reputation. I mean attaching villages and houses is one thing, but churches, that is wrong. You are asking for a bad reputation by destroying a religions holy place to pray and worship their God.

I think the vikings did deserve the treatment they got. They would plunder loot from the churches. They were also war-crazed jerks! I think the vikings got what was coming at them.
