I would have rather lived in the Roman Empire because if I were a Plebeian, I would not have many rights. However, by the time the Empire started, some Plebeian rights were gained. I mean, who would want to live in a place where some people don't have a say in the government, or don't get to pive within the city walls, or aren't
even considered citizens? On the other hand, if I were a Patrician, I wouldn't mind living in the republic because they had supreme power over everybody else, and only made up 1/10 of the population.
I agree with you Ellen. If I was a plebeian I would have wanted more rights in the government. I would have also wanted to be considered part of the republic and not have to stay outside of the walls. I would have also not wanted to only have the power to vote, I would have wanted to be more involved.
If I could choose to live in either the republic or empire, I'd choose the empire mainly because of the different emperors, good and bad.
This is probably a poor decision, since there was Caligula, (and others like him), but there were many other good emperors that made up for it, like Marcus Aurelius. :3
I also agree with where Ellen says that Plebians had more rights in the empire than republic.
Just imagine someone like Caligula today declaring themselves "god of the new world"...
I know this is my question, but I get a say in things... right? Anyway, I agree with Han and Daniel and they both have great information to support their beliefs. So, I personally believe living during the Roman empire would be my thought because you have rights and great, powerful warriors that expand the empire more then ever before. There are skepticals and if you didn't like the way the emperor was ruling, you could assassinate him. There was a lot of bad emperors that tore Rome apart, but they all died before lots of the good emperors did.
I agree with how you said you would choose the empire due to good emperors that make up for the bad. I would love to live in a time of a good emperor as well if we could choose to do so.
I agree with you Han because the emperors were very harsh, but some were good. In the end There were more bad leaders than good.
I would have rather lived in the Republic because just like Han said there were some really bad emperors out there like Nero and I would also like to live during the Republic because when Julius Caesar was alive he was alive in the Republic time. He made Rome better with technology and made Rome's army stronger
I agree with Daniel because I believe he was one of the best rulers and he gave the plebeians lots of rights which is most of the population in Rome. plus saying you lived in Rome with all of those bad emperors would make you look bad. Lastly that it would not be fun because a lot of those bad things that affect the Roman people.
I totally agree with you Jenna. Plebleians made up most of the population and since in the empire they had more rights it gave a better image to everyone else. Plus, it raised up the popularity at Rome, giving it a better quality.
And (I forgot to make it 3-4 sentences) So J.C made Rome stronger a lot of ways so that's one of my reasons and another is a Republic is so much like a Democracy and an Empire is so much like a king and queen so you people who chose the empire you rather live in a time with kings and queens and not a Democracy. The United States is a Democracy.
I feel that the republic would be a more stable city. I say this, because the unfairness to the Plebeians ended eventually, and anyone could vote for their consuls.Whereas in the Roman Empire a ruler was rarely chosen, but usually taken by force.
I agree with Josie because the Plebeians would have gotten more rights eventually. I say this because the Plebeians could just stop during what ever the Patricians wanted. A Republic you chose your leaders but in a Empire you don't so that's another reason I chose Republic because you don't know who is going to be your leader when in a republic you can vote for your leader.
I disagree with Daniel because there was a lot of wars. And if you were a plebeian your home might get destroyed.
I completely agree with you Josie. The fact that I would have no control as to who makes changes to where I live sickens me. What if it's a really bad guy? Then he or she can rule until death! That's ridiculous!
I feel that you are totally right Ellen. The Plebeians didn't have equal rights in the republic, but would you take the risk of having one horrible supreme ruler, or one bad senator, but other good senators?
To me, it all depends. I would have definitely wanted to live in the Roman Empire while the Pax Romana, or "Roman Peace", was going on. There were very little wars, many buildings were built, and Rome was undisturbed. However, I would not want to live the Roman Empire when the poor emperors were ruling. For example, Nero and Caligula. They might have changed Rome, but not for the better. I would have liked to live in the Roman Republic if I were a Patrician because I would have complete power over 90% of Rome, the Plebeians. If I were a Plebeian, I would only want to live in the Republic if Julius Caesar was alive. He gave Plebeians more right and only 10% on Rome didn't like him, the Patricians, because they felt as if he was becoming too much if power. Overall, I think the best option would be the Roman Empire during the Pax Romana.
I don't expect anyone to agree with me, but this is just my personal opinion.
I 100% agree with you, Libby. I believe what you said about living in Pax Romana during the Empire. I also agree with your statement about being a patrician in the republic and plebeian during JC. You stated that nicely and picked my point of view up, too.
I totally agree with you, Libby. The Pax Romana would have been almost the perfect time to live in and if not, then the time when Julius Ceaser was alive, for a plebian that is.
I would rather live in the Roman Empire. I would rather live in the Roman Empire because there were better Emperors. It seemed as if more was done in the Roman Empire rather than in the Roman Republic.
I accidentally pressed submit before I was done. Another reason that I would rather live in the Roman Empire is because there was things built like the Colosseum that many people enjoyed going to. I also think that it was good to have the Pax Romana, (roman peace) in the Empire.
I half way agree with you, Kiley. There were many good emperors like Marcus Aurelius and Augustus. Unfortunately, you can't overlook the fact that there were also many bad emperors that didn't improve Rome or benefit its people, like Caligula. Many would probably not want to live during their rule. However, you and I both said, if we could live during the Pax Romana, that would be different story.
I would live in the empire. Only because of the Pax Romona. There would be little wars and more buildings would be made.
I would prefer living in the Roman republic. I would get sick if one ruler the entire time espically if he or she wasn't benefiting Rome and was making changes that harm us. Having a republic would give a fresh mind set whenever the other leader is wrong.
You have to remember, though, that many bad emperors have gotten assassinated if they were no help to Rome. You would go through many emperors, and not all are bad.
I would have no preferration, but I would have to have decent living conditions in either. I would want a good emperor if I were in the Empire, and some wealth in the Republic. If I had decent living conditions, I wouldn't care.
I am now changing my mind I think the empire would be better...Because first off there was the Pax Romana which seems like a great time to live in which means "Roman peace" Also because if there was a bad emperor they could just have another one in a month or so. There were so many of them in a year so you could get ride of a bad one more easy. Also it was re time of Augustus so that would be great with all of the benefits. There is only one good thing about living on the republic which is J.C. and that is it.......So I have come to a conclusion that the empire is better there is more +s than -s
I completely agree with you Jenna. Living during the Pax Romana would had been great. There was so much more for the Plebeians to do. Plus, during the republic the patricians had complete power over Rome. There was not much the Plebeians could do about this either. But during the empire, Plebeians and Patricians could both become emperor. Along with that, they had more rights then before.
I think that if I had to pick between the two then I would pick the empire. There was a variety of different emperors, good and bad. And like everyone else the plebleians had more rights than in the republic.
Honestly, I would have to choose the Roman Empire. Though it would also depend on who is emperor at the time. If I couldn't choose the emperor though I would still go with the Roman Empire because of the Pax Romana or "Roman Peace " time era.
I strongly agree with Ellen because during the empire and republic pleiblians and patritions had different rights. If I was a pleiblian I would rather live in the empire where we get more rights. Otherwise if I was a patrition I would rather live in a time where I got all the power.
I would rather be in the Roman Empire because if I was in the Republic, then plebians wouldn't have many rights and I would most likely be a plebian then a patrician. Because the plebians were treated so badly, I would rather be in the Roman Empire because the plebians gained more rights and weren't treated as bad. Although, there were many bad emperors and if I were to live in the Roman Empire then I could have been ruled by a bad emperor. Even if this happened I would still like to be in the Roman Empire than Republic.
I agree with you, especially where you said Plebians had more rights in the empire than in the republic. In the republic, they were treated like trash by the Patricians, but in the empire, it was a bit fairer.
Also, referencing what Lauren said earlier, if there was a bad emperor, you would just assassinate them, and then BOOM.
He's out of the picture. :3 After all, emperors like Caligula only did reign for about four years or less.
I would rather live in the Roman Empire. This is because during the Empire there was Pax Romana which means Roman peace. If I lived in the Republic and I was a plebeian I would not as much rights as the patrician did. In the Empire many emperors help the plebeians. Also in the empire it was expanding and I would want to live in a huge empire. I agree with Sean because in Pax Romana there will be very little wars and a lot of construction was happening.
I completely agree with Oscar and Sean because there would be Pax Romana and that there would be bigger Empire.
I would like to live in the Roman Empire because of Pax Romana Roman Peace.I would live in the Empire because if I were a plebeian I would have rights than a plebeian in the Republic. Also during Pax Roman there were were probably no wars.
WOW!!! This class did a wonderful job answering the question! Lauren I guess you would be the one to blame for this because you asked such a thought provoking question!
In my opinion, I would have rather had lived during the Empire than the Republic. During the empire, people seemed to have more rights compared to the republic and people were not voluntold to join the army. Like Han said poor emperors might have been a problem, but the good news is, if they were a bad emperor most likely they would have been killed soon enough for a better emperor to take over. To me the republic seemed o one sided and all the power and freedoms rested in the hands of the rich!
I would rather live in the republic. I would rather live in the republic because it would be a lot more peaceful. There was a lot less problems in that time
