Charlemagne forced many of the European people to become Christian or he would kill them. "Believe in my God or prepare to meet him." Even with this harsh demand he still did some great things like improve education, fixed the trail/ law system, won many battles expanding the Frankish empire, and converted many to the Christian faith. But does the good outweigh the bad? Explain why!

I think charlemagne was a bad ruler. He forced people to convert to christianity. I think that there was no reason to do that because you shouldnt threaten people because of their belifes.

I disagree Taniya. I think the good does out weigh the bad. Killing is never good, but times were different back then. People were more violent and uncivilized in the past. Plus many followers of different religions spread their believes violently, its not like Charlemagne was unique. But Charlemagne was a unique figure during medieval times. He made school for children, spread the Frankish empire, and improve the court system to make it fairer.

I disagree. I think the good out weighs the bad because he did not do much bad in his time as a ruler but he did a whole ton of good. Even forcing the people to become Christian helped Europe because they were able to trade with other christians and the christians inside of Europe.

I believe Charlemagne was a bad leader he converted every on into Christian faith. That was wrong to make them just convert there entire religion something that they believed there entire life and to just be forced to be another .Its disgusting to do this he could been more peaceful in the conversion this could have killed thousands of his subjects just cause of there religion.

That is true, Brandon, about how the forcing religion was bad and disgusting, but did you consider the good? I think the best thing Charlemagne did was improve education. Education was surprisingly scarce, and improving it was important. Educated people could do a lot more for society than non-educated people, so overall it really helps. Considering the good and bad I would say that Charlemagne was an okay king, so I would disagree with you Brandon.

I agree that Charlemagne made a bad choice to convert EVERYONE to Christianity. If he didn't he might have extended his empire farther.Think about the Indian emperor Akbar, he let anyone be what religion they wanted to be.

In my opinion the good and bad even out to where Charlemagne was an okay king. Religion was a really big thing during the middle ages. It was especially important during the middle ages because the middle ages (or dark ages) was a really dark time with a lot of death and disease in Europe. In these conditions people found it very hard to live a pure life, in other words this was just a really bad time to live during and the majority of people were poor. With little joy, people needed hope. This hope came in a religion, specifically an afterlife. This helped because people could have a reassurance that when they died they could go to a wonderful place (for example, heaven), if they were good. When Charlemagne forced them to a specific religion, they no longer had this joy, for they didn't fully believe in their new religion. Because of all this, Charlemagne's decision to force people to a specific religion was a pretty bad choice. On the other hand, Charlemagne did some really good things. He improved education, which was really good because during the dark ages education was pretty scarce. He also won many battles for the Frankish empire. Lastly, he improved the law system, this was also important because it promoted order. Therefore, in my opinion Charlemagne was a decent king.

King Charlemagne was a pretty harsh king. But once you add all of the good things he has done in his reign, the threatening almost vanishes away. Long ago religion was a huge thing, it shapes who you are, if you don't have an religion you were reconsidered evil. And if you believe in the famous religion you are good. So that is why the king was so harsh on religion. That was the base of life. So at least he had a reason. I believe education was his best thing.

I disagree with Charlemagne converting everyone to Christianity. He should have been like Akbar, letting everyone be there own religion. Although he did many things good such as building schools. I still don't think it evens out though.

I disagree because if you did not convert you would not of had the luxury that they had like education and laws. They might of got threatened to become Christian but it really would help then with defense laws all sorts of things they did not have before.

I think Charlemagne was a good ruler because if people did become Christian then they would have good law and education. It is also good because if you win many battles you earn more land. The downside to that was if he won too many they would have no defense.

I agree with you Julian, but it was kind of unfair of Charlemagne to rip people of their beliefs and make them convert to a whole other religion they didn't know about. Charlemagne did many other great things so I would have to say the good out weighs the bad.

I think the good did out way the evil. yes he did kill a lot of people because thy didn't switch but back then most people would switch just because they would have a good living in the Frank Empire. And back then most people believed in pagan gods so they really didn't have a religion.

The good and the bad things he did were both equal. He did many great things to help the empire. He conquered a lot of land expanding the Frankish empire, and created an empire that included all of France & parts of Italy, Spain, & Germany. Charlemagne also did some bad things. In the villages and towns he conquered, he forced people to believe in the Christian God or prepare to meet him. It was a smart idea, but at the same time he should have let the people practice their beliefs.

Grace in my opinion your opinion is perfectly stated. You explained the places he conquered which honestly, I didn't know that well. Although, I think his goods outweighed his bads but just by a little bit.

I agree with you Grace. He did do good and bad things, he helped the empire which was good, but he did make everyone convert to Christianity or die which was bad. I still agree with you, but I think that the good outweighs the bad by a little.

I think that, that one thing he did bad and all the other things he did good are weighed more toward the good. The reason for my feelings is that, that was 1 bad thing he did but he did multiple things that overcome that. Make that 2, it was the converting and the killing. Still, he was a good king. His nobles were as good as him for taking care of Leo III.

I think that the good outweighed the bad. Yes, making everyone convert to Christianity or die was bad, but what about the good things he did, like improving education, or the court to make it more fair. Overall, I think that Charlemagne was a good king.

I agree with you Autumn, Charlemagne did do some harsh things, but he improved others lives too! He made lives of the people in the court easier with more justified options, and he did improve educations too!

I agree that overall Charlemagne was a good leader. Yes, he did force people to convert to Christian or die. But I also believe that he is also trying to follow his religion, in doing what Jesus Christ did. In the bible I believe it states that you should follow in the footsteps of Jesus, to teach people of God. But he just took it harsher than he should have.

I think that good outweighed the bad because forcing people to convert to Christianity is pretty harsh and all, but Charlemagne did many good things too! Such as Improving Education, Justifying court, conquered land which expanded the Frankish Empire and a lot more!

I think good ou ways the bad. I think that because different civilizations have different religions and are spread in violent ways because of people thinking religions other that theirs is not true.So if he asked them convert to Christianity or die it helps by having more people following Christianity their will be less violence between them too.

I think he did do a lot of good things but he forced people to be something they weren't. Religion was a big thing and was very important in a persons life.

I don't think it does. When someone has a religion they base their life around that and if you don't follow the religion you want then your not going to want to base your life around that. Even though he did a lot of good things religion is a big thing in life and being forced to be a certain one is unfair.

I think the good definitely outweighs the bad because he only did a small amount of "bad" things in his life, but no one is perfect. Charlemagne did tons and tons of good for Europe like improving education which back then people had very little of and since now they had better education people could make new inventions and forward human kind. With better education they made better medicine and made things easier. He also improved the court system and 1200 years later it only changed a tiny bit. He made things more even and fairer then before. It was a different time back then so killing was accepted and many other people forced religion on people it's not really new news for us.
