The vikings were vicious and terrifying for the people of Medieval Europe. They were seen as especially ruthless because their favorite places to attack were churches and monasteries. Do you think it was right or wrong for the vikings to attack monasteries and churches? Why?

I think yes because they were doing what their gods told them what to do and they followed it. Just how like we do with are gods.

No I dont think that it was right for vikings to attack monistaries and churches.Just because they are weak and can't defend themselfs , the vikings should have attacked somewhere else. When they are doing this , they are interupting their services.

As the saying goes "All is fair in love and war." But I think in this case it was not fair or right that the Vikings attacked churches and monasteries. I get why they did it...less chance of getting harmed, the churches had tons of money and they did not believe in Christianity so they did not fear killing holy men. But come on! These vikings are supposed to be fierce warriors. How does killing monks and priests make them tough?

I think it was fair having so much wealth in one place and not being protected it was to easy. And it was basically a declaration of war and all fare in war.And back then they didn't really had to much people defend church's,

I believe it was wrong. They were attacking a religious place! For the Vikings it was like a every day thing, but to the people that worshiped there, they were heart broken. The Vikings never had a official worship center, but hey did mostly worship their gods on farms. Usually who ever owned the farm would lead the ceremonies, but it was never official. Only if they ever stopped to think for a bit if something like this happened to them. If a clan of warriors just started running towards you with a sword in their hand while you were praying with your eyes closed. That would be very disrespectful. But the Vikings did that like it was nothing.

I agree with you because the monks and people that went to those churches and monasteries and based their whole life off of religion were absolutely devastated and heartbroken. The Vikings did not care though, it did not affect the Vikings at all so they attacked the churches.

You could go with this two different ways. If you looked at it from the Viking's prospective, it would be perfectly fine. This is true because the Vikings are not christian or Muslim, they had their own gods. In fact, their gods encourage them to attack other places, and they encourage war. However you would think differently if you were a christian or monk. These monasteries and churches are pretty much holy places, nobody would dare attack them... except the Vikings! So if you were a christian or monk, it would be considered wrong. Since I am christian I think that it was wrong.

I think it is not fair. The citizens in the churches and monasteries are monks and priests. It didn't make the vikings look any more tougher. The people there worshiped and practiced their religion. It was not fair of them

I do not think it was right or wrong. It was okay because the vikings did not care about the monasteries. It was wrong because it was a peaceful religious center that did not cause any trouble.

I agree with you. They Vikings had no attachments to these places. Other that lived there like monks thought that they were ruthless killers.

I think this was wrong because monasteries and church's could be not be protected as well as if you live in a castle. And people from it. They go only for god.

I think that by having all of the wealth in one place was a not very smart of them. This made it a easy and quick target. The vikings did not believe in Christianity so they had no reason not to attack.

I agree with you Mr. Kaciuba, Vikings loved honor, and it was important to them. There would be no honor in killing an unarmed man. Eben though you would get lots of money.

I say they are doing the right things. They are smart. They attack the groups that can not protect so they get all the loot they want. But killing them was not the right thing. They should have let them live or bring the monks with them. Burning the places they attaked afterward was also not the right thing. They didn't always burn down everything but when they did it caused a lot of harm.

I think it was fine for Vikings to attack religious buildings. They're not Christine. They were pagan and believed in war gods. They believe that war is a good thing. What was gong to happen when they attack them they're going to hell. They didn't believe in heaven/hell, they believed in war.

I agree with you Logan A. They are doing the right thing in their minds. But you said that they shouldn't have killed monks. I say kill, or enslave. It would seem silly just to tell a monk "ok go run away" and not kill or enslave, put in prison, etc. I don't understand how burning can harm. It's either save for future raids or burn because you're a savage and destroy and kill (if you are in military groups)

I think it was wrong because they did nothing to hurt the vikings. They also did have lots of wealth in churches. Which would lead the vikings to their churches.

I disagree with you Brandon because the people in those churches did nothing wrong. They were just practicing their religion.

I think it was a good thing because they were basically practicing their religion when they attacked monasteries and churches because they believed it made their gods happy. But the monks warned them that if they did, they would go to hell. But they didn't listen because they didn't believe in Heaven or Hell.

I completely agree, everything said in your response made perfect sense. The Vikings didn't believe in Christianity so there was no reason the Vikings shouldn't attack. The other side of the story has yet to be talked about and I think it would be necessary to think of the other side of the story.

Back when the vikings attacked, they believed they were doing a good thing. They didn't understand why it was wrong. But today i believe it was very wrong to attack the places. What if you were the victims how will you feel.

Really, it depends on the point of view your looking at. In the Vikings point of view it was fine because, there was a lot of money, less of a chance to get caught/harmed, and no consequences. In the European view it's a lot different. Really, it's almost the exact opposite. The fact they had a lot of money didn't matter. The thing that mattered was the building. the last thing that really seemed wrong was that the Europeans thought that they were protected and that the Vikings attacking would send them straight to hell.
