The author of "The Prince," Machiavelli gave advice to the kings of the 1500s & 1600s on how to rule. Today, in modern day politics his advice could be seen as cruel and evil, but back then he wrote about what worked. Do you think the ideas outlined by Machiavelli are evil? What ideas or concepts of his do you find to be particularly evil or fair?

I do think his teachings were evil. I think this because in my opinion things that he said in the book were basically making fun on dumb people. It was also saying that to be mean and steal from people, then don´t show any mercy.

I agree and disagree with you Taniyah. Some of his teachings were cruel, but they all had good reason behind them. The reason you mention, I do agree with. However, not all of his teachings were really bad.

I disagree because he wasn't making fun of people, but he was teaching them his ideas about ruling. They were smart ideas that could help make an empire stronger.

I think some of his ideas are evil, but not all. However, his ideas were legitimate. I think he was correct when he said it was better to be feared than loved, because people could easily take advantage of you if you are kind. One of his ideas that I think is evil is evil is when he says that if you are going to give something, give somebody else's stuff. I think this is evil because it is really cruel to steal and even crueler to steal to give.

I agree because if you were not feared lots of people would take advantage. They would also call war on you a lot.

I think his teachings were good. They showed to be feared so that other leaders would be scared of you. That is important because too many people would take advantage of you.

I think that he was right. What he told in the book was right for what it was like back then. If you wanted to get something through your empire head it would be to scare them. So if someone stepped out of line do something very bad and put their head on a stick so all can see. Then no one would ever do anything bad again.

I think they were very helpful not evil. It showed a dumb ruler how to become a hated ruler not loved. Machiavelli said it was better to be strict and mean than loving an d nice.

I would say both because some of the things he said were totally evil and would never work. But some were pretty smart and could actually work in an empire.

I think some of his ideas are evil, but not all. I think he was correct when he said it was better to be feared than loved, because people could easily take advantage if you are nice. They will also think when they do something wrong they think you will let them go without punishment.

I agree with Machiavelli because you never want to be taken advantage of. When you are taken advantage of you will have people begging you for money and you do not want this to happen. But if your are feared but fair you which is what your goal is. Be nice in public but stay feared

I believe that the book is cruel. But, the thing is that secretly we all do this. Everyone cheats, everyone tries to take the easy way out. But when someone is watching we act like we are all innocent. That we think they its wrong which it is. But we ignore over and over again, until it is forgotten. One example is where it says to only do good things when someone is watching, bit there are many posters around the school which say be a leader when no one is watching.

I Totally agree with you Ariaceli S. I also think that most of his teachings were bad, but we also do use some of them today to take the easy way out. I think that most people who try to use his ideas can but if you really want to try i would stop using them.

I think most of his teachings were helpful, but not all of them. One of his helpful tips in his book was to be mean rather than nice because people could easily take advantage of you. Most of his ideas made sense and helped an emperor rule.

I think that his ways were evil. I think sometimes rulers have to be harsh because they could be taken advantage of and used, but if rulers took this advice they were doing bad things. There is a difference between being a harsh and fair ruler. Some of his ways were okay but most of them took it over the limit.

I agree with you Grace M, sometimes his teachings weren't that bad. You know Some of the suggestions we still do today. Also, it is not like the person was forcing kings to follow this, it is just advice.

One I think is evil is man is easily fooled, be a good liar this is basicallly encouraging you to lie and trick people because they believe things easily. I think this one is true it is better to be feared than loved because people will take advantage of you if your really nice and loved but if your feared than they wont rebel against you or anything,

I think that most of his teachings were evil, but not all of them. Sometimes rulers have to be feared not loved, if they are too nice then they could be taken advantage of. The one rule, when you give something to someone it shouldn't be yours it should be someone else's, that rule was cruel.

I think that his teachings were evil. He said to kill your enemies and make sure people fear you and instead of love you. That is what I think his teachings were evil.
