In my opinion, the most impressive kingdom was Great Zimbabwe. The walls that they built are spectacularly sturdy, and are still standing today! Not only are they sturdy, but they're tall, and don't do anything besides look tall because the walls in Great Zimbabwe were only built to represent power. (basically, the walls are useless. Relatable.:'))

I agree with you. I think that their walls were very impressive. The most impressive is that they took the time to build useless walls. It is cool that they did that.

Useless is a strong word. I wouldn't necessarily say the walls were useless, considering they were USED to show the king's power and wealth. You may think that those walls were pointless, since they weren't used for protection. However, to the king's back then, they were important. I get what you are saying, but I just wanted to clarify :)

I would not necessarily use the word ¨useless¨. If you were sitting in the thrown of royalty I am pretty sure that you would want some type of architecture right outside of your home. Back then, their way of showing royalty was having architecture to show off, but these days its all about the cool cars and fancy pets.

The walls of Great Zimbabwe are the most impressive. I think this because they were built sturdy and not for the usual reason that you would build walls. They built it to show off. The walls are also really tall. That shows that the people that made them were hard workers and showed pride in what they built.

I disagree. The walls didn't have as much design as the churches. The walls also weren't underground.

I totally agree with you, Kiley, because the wall were used to show power/wealth and not protection and the fact that they still stand today is very impressive.

I think Great Zimbabwe was most impressive because it was a different way of thinking to use stone like that. They used their stone for not walls , but for showing their wealth. I think that's kinda cool .

In my opinion, Ethiopia was the the most impressive. I think this because the churches that they made were unforgettable. In case anyone needs clarification, the Ethiopian churches were massive and made from red volcanic rock and a cross was formed at the top. Not only that, but the churches were built underground!! They had pathways that led you down to them. It is truly astonishing how they built these beautiful structures, yet they go the extra mile and build them underground! It wasn't like one church and their done, though. King Lalibela built 11 churches! Unbelievable, if you ask me.If any of you want to see these churches, all you have to do is google Ethiopian churches :)

I was most impressed in Benin. Benin seemed so cool because of the things they traded, like masks, leopard skins and more! I was also impressed that there was no Muslim influence throughout their whole reign.

ι would 100% disagree with you Greg.I would say that Eithiopias churches 30ft underground are alot more impresive than buliding some masks that are leporad. Ethiopia is very impressive with there strength and power.

I would pick the volcanic churches. Considering, how long it would take to be able to carve and place a massive church(s) is amazing to me. Imagine how long it would take to actually be ready to deal with volcanic rock! Volcanic rock is already pretty sweet, but volcanic rock churches!? Mind Blown!!!!!!!

It sounds so cool and amazing. I mean people think America's cool, check out Ethiopia they have lava churches! I wonder how they got down there anyway I'd think it would be kinda difficult to go down through the top.

I agree Josie it 's so cool how they built lava rock and built churches. I also agree because I wonder what they dug with to get 30 feet below.I also agree I really want to go into the church and cheek it out.

I think Kilwa was most impressive, because they developed a whole new civilization basically. I think Great Zimbabwe was interesting, but not really impressive. So they had some really tall walls, but there's not much more. Ethiopia is awesome though, because think about it, underground lava churches. It sounds pretty cool.

I wouldn't necessarily say that one improvement isn't but I can't really say that art or Indian Ocean Trade is impressive, either. I have to say the churches are the most impressive, and I'm going to compare it with the walls instead of the other two because they don't come close at all. The churches are more impressive because there are more design to the churches. The churches are also made out of volcanic red rock, according the the Ethiopia packet we read during the jig saw activity. The churches are also commonly seen underground, which would take a longer time to construct. The walls are just walls; they don't go underground usually, and they didn't for this African civilization. The churches also have an interior, with exquisite design specific to their culture. The walls, well, are just walls, like I previously stated. Congratulations for reaching the end of my comment, you're a trooper.

I found all 4 of the African kingdoms to be fascinating. However, I think the stone churches of Ethiopia to be the most impressive. I think it is crazy how they were able to dig their way down 30 or more feet to build/ hollow out a stone church. They made it out of stone due to the lack of building resources, this shows that the Ethiopians were extremely resourceful. A close second for me was Kilwa. Kilwa is cool because they did so much trading that a new culture and language developed that still is used in 2 different countries today. The walls of Great Zimbabwe are cool but everyone builds walls, not everyone builds a stone church into the ground. Finally, the masks and artwork of Benin express cultural ideas but again cannot compete with a church built out of volcanic rock. I am not even sure if there are other underground churches like this in the world. This makes the Ethiopian churches even more unique in my opinion.

I would say that Eithiopia is the most impressive with there volcanic rock church's built and dug 30ft underground. I think that the people were very brave to do that as well. I mean I would be scared that I would fall actually! Plus I mean to carve into the Earth seems very hard and takes a lot of strength. I say plus it looks the most beautiful!

I think Ethiopia is the most impressive because they built churches 30 feet below the ground and then built them out of volcanic rock that is pretty impressive. Also Ethiopia is most impressive because I really want to see the inside and check out the churches. Also the churches are huge which also make Ethiopia impressive.

I can agree that Ethiopian churches are awesome, but I found Kilwa most interesting. Trade was one of the best ways to get salt or art. So you could get someone to build these churches for you by trade. It may be hard, but someone around must have the blueprints to build a church.

I thought Kilwa was the most interesting because they were one of the only kingdoms who traded with people from India and China. This could had brought new inventions to Africa that hadn't been there before.

I think that the stone walls in Zimbabwe are the most impressive because they are still standing today. These walls are still standing today so that means that they are strong (not strong to use for protection but strong to stay up after a long time) These walls are also extremely big so that really does show of power/wealth of the city.

I think Great Zembabwe was the most impressive. I think this because they built walls 30 feet thick. Also the walls were used to show wealth and power which I found strange. Their walls were also 17 feet high.

It's also quite surprising to see that these walls are still standing today, considering they weren't paved, and the rocks were unevenly staggered to build the walls.

I feel that Kilwa was more impressive, not only due to the fact that their trade was powerful on the Indian Ocean, but a whole new culture formed from that trade, Swahili. In fact, that culture is still around today, which I find really impressive.

All of the kingdoms amaze me. But I think that the Ethiopian churches are the most amazing. First of all, the Great Zimbabwe walls aren't that impressive because if I had enough time, I can probably build a wall just like that. Then, Benins art is wonderful, but, I have seen enough art in the history of human beings. I have never seen such a thing like churches built underground. That is why I am most impressed by the Ethiopian churches.

I completely agree with you Tony. If we had enough time to build it, we could build the wall they built them with no cement to keep it together. they made the wall like stacking blocks. Also, I love art and Benin had beautiful art though there is lots of art in the history of humans. In conclusion, Ethiopia had intricate underground churches that were most amusing.

I honestly thought the volcanic rock churches in Ethiopia were most fascinating. I always think that the ancient people are so intelligent to figure out how to create huge and complex architect. It amuses me to think that in all civilizations, but Africa had even less contact with the outside world and less resources then everyone else. That is something that amuses me the most. What is so interesting about the churches to me is that they were carved out of volcanic rock to shape a cross with many designs on it.
